The Constantine Badge is a historic, authentically crafted replica of an 1858 U.S. half dollar that was hand-hewn by a Confederate soldier, Harry St. John Dixon (Psi 1867), amidst the tumult and terror of the Civil War. Brother Dixon improvised this iconic badge out of silver half dollar over weeks of tedious work, with only a soldier's pocket knife and file, fearing that Sigma Chi chapters throughout the South would cease to exist following the War.
For two years Dixon wore this badge on his hat, hoping thereby to catch the eye of other Sigma Chi brethren, be they Union or Confederate. After the Constantine Chapter was formed at a meeting on September 17, 1864 in a field outside the battle for Atlanta, his singular crude but precious emblem was passed from one Brother to another.
Though Brother Dixon's original Constantine Badge was lost during the maelstrom of the Civil War, we have created this keepsake replica in his honor, and to perpetuate the spirit of persistence it symbolizes.
This Constantine Badge comes in two metal choices: solid Sterling Silver ($40) or Silver-Plated alloy ($20), each fashioned with an antique finish, packaged in a drawstring pouch of either deep blue leather (Sterling version) or muslin cotton.
